| By 1960, the company had completed construction of
its own 100,000 square-foot factory in Victoriaville, with a local workforce which
grew to a peak of 1,200 employees. Meanwhile, the need for more production space
has grown and today Utex Fashion Group garments
are made in a number of offshore
locations as well as in Canada and the United States.
Utex was the first North-American company to work with factories in China to
produce fashion outerwear. In 1973, Irving Gurberg’s insightful decision
to produce quality garments using an innovative and lightweight warmth factor—down—quickly
made Utex very important to the outerwear markets in Canada and the United States.
Down-filled jackets and coats remain a Utex trademark even now.
In the early 1970’s the first American Utex International sales office
was established in New York City. Today, several Seventh-Avenue showrooms and
a superb New Jersey warehouse support a nation-wide sales force and we ship Utex fashion across the United States. Canadian retailers continue to be serviced from
head-office facilities in Montreal.
Irving Gurberg remained at the helm of the company until his death in 1991.
Since that time, his son, David, has succeeded him as President and CEO.
